Mobile ad hoc networks are networks of mobile devices. In these networks the end-systems themselves are used to forward messages in a cooperative way from the sender towards one or more destinations. Application scenarios for mobile ad hoc networks are inter-vehicular communication, spontaneous message exchange between students or the relization of an access network for existing communication infrastructure.

In an ad hoc network the mobile devices within communication range have to share the capacity of the spectrum for transmitting data. Each device uses a (usually quite large) part of this capacity to forward messages for other nodes. Hence mobile ad hoc networks are even more prone to suffer from congestion than common wired networks are. One single sender may - be it accidentally or intentionally - cause a collapse of the whole network due to overload.

To utilize the capacity of the network better than it is possible with existing approaches, we will use the self organization capabilities of the network to protect it from congestion. Additionally, in mobile ad hoc networks it is possible to incorporate all communication layers into a congestion control mechanism since they all reside on accessible end-systems. By exploiting these two characteristics the network itself will be able to determine the current load situation and protect itself from congestion.

The goal of the project is to design, implement and evaluate mechanisms that realize this concept and are - despite the cross-layer approach - easily deployable in different mobile ad hoc networks.

CXCC is conducted as a part of the DFG Schwerpunktprogramm "Basissoftware für Selbstorganisierende Infrastrukturen für Vernetzte Mobile Systeme" (DFG SPP 1140).
