Abstract: We present an overview of ad-hoc routing protocols that makeforwarding decisions based on the geographical position of apacket's destination. Other than the destination's position, each node needsto know only its own position and the position of its one-hopneighbors in order to forward packets. Sinceit is not necessary to maintain explicit routes, position-basedrouting does scale well even if the network is highly dynamic. Thisis a major advantage in a mobile ad-hoc network where the topologymay change frequently. The main prerequisitefor position-based routing is that a sender can obtain thecurrent position of the destination.Therefore, recently proposed location services are discussed inaddition toposition-based packet forwarding strategies. We provide a qualitativecomparison of the approaches in both areas and investigateopportunities for future research.
