Abstract: In this paper we propose a concept for transparent access toVRML state information. Our approach enhances VRMLbrowsers to provide additional functionality instead of plac-ingthe burden for state access on content developers. Theenhanced functionality is realized as an extension to the Ex-ternalAuthoring Interface (EAI). Any application which re-lieson a VRML browser as the 3D presentation engine canuse the new EAI functionality to get and set the state of arbi-traryVRML content. In order to support diverse applica-tions,the proposed methods allow not only retrieval of thefull state of a complete world, but also of the state of singleobjects and state changes. Since the results of state accessshould be independent of browser implementations, we alsospecify an encoding for state information. Data in this formare either produced or consumed during state access. For theencoding of state information we use an efficient, easy-to-parsebinary encoding.
