Abstract: It is not possible to change the MAC layer implementationof commodity 802.11 wireless network devices. But many cross-layerprotocols for MANETs rely on a modified MAC layer. Therefore suchprotocols cannot easily be tested in real world environments. We propose to usea sensor network platform, the ESB sensor nodes, for this purpose. Wepresent a software framework to make cross-layer protocol implementations andmethodical experimentation feasible. The framework consists of software toolsand modules for many frequently occuring tasks. We also give someexperimentation results from an implementation of a cross-layer protocol usingthe framework.
